In 2014, Playa Palmares became the first beach in the state of Jalisco to fly the prestigious Blue Flag, signifying international certification of quality. The narrow stretch of pristine sand is three miles (6 km) south of the Zona Romantica in an area of condos, villas and resorts. It is named not for palms - there aren't any - but a condo complex. The waters are a crystalline turquoise, unmuddied by any jungle rivers. Surf is gentle to moderate, making it great for swimming and families. Public access is on the southern end. It has lifeguards, restrooms, showers, a wheelchair ramp, parking and food concessions and vendors. Lounges, tables and umbrellas can be rented. Sunsets and strolls are free.
