The Beverly Hills Hotel is the grande dame of Los Angeles hotels. Built in 1912, the pink Mediterranean palace with its 208 guest rooms and suites and 23 bungalows is the heart of posh Beverley Hills. It was Beverley Hills's first historic landmark if for no other reason than Elizabeth taylor spent six of her eight honeymoons here. There is of course the Polo Lounge where deals and reputations are made and the La Prairie Spa. But in 2014, LGBTQ organizations and an impressive list of Hollywood A-listers launched a boycott after the Sultan of Brunei, its owner since 1987, announced he was adding aspects of Sharia law to Brunei's legal system. They include stoning to death as the sentence for a broad range of sexual behaviors, including homosexuality. When the Gill Action Fund, the LGBTQ advocacy organization, canceled a conference, the hotel responded that it does not discriminate on the basis of sexual orientation. The sultan owns the Dorchester Collection of luxury hotels, which includes the nearby Hotel Bel Aire and the Dorchester in London and the Plaza Athénée, Hotel Meurice in Paris.
