The Art Deco Welcome Center and Museum on Ocean Drive at 10th Street provides a good introduction to the architecture, revitalization and spirit of Miami Beach. Nicely paced guided walking tours explore Art Deco and MiMo architecture, Jewish Miami Beach and the contributions gays and lesbians have made to the neighborhood. The monthly Gay and Lesbian tour gives gay designer Leonard Horowitz credit for the rainbow colors of South Beach where the 1930s buildings had been done in beiges and dirty whites. Only two buildings today still have his original palette of colors. A co-founder of the Miami Design Preservation League, he died of AIDS at age 43 in 1989. A section of 11th Street has been designated as Leonard Horowitz Place. Tours are $25 for adults, $20 for seniors and students, and include admission to the museum. Museum admission is $5 without a walking tour.
