Housing Works, benefiting the homeless living with AIDS/HIV, has more than a dozen locations in Manhattan and Brooklyn, including a bookstore cafe in Soho. It is the largest community-based AIDS service organization in the US. Started in Chelsea in 1990 by four activists with ACT UP, the thrifts have upscale used items - clothing, furniture, books, housewares - at good prices with 100 percent of the profits aiding the homeless. Each location has a slightly different atmosphere, reflecting its neighborhood. All have great buys. Open seven days a week, hours varying with location.
