The Statue of Liberty is known around the world as a symbol of both New York and America, and most tourists will want to have a chance to get up close to this impressive monument.  It's best to combine a trip to the Statue with a trip to Ellis Island, as the long lines, ferry rides, and security checks will make this a day's worth of touring.  A short ferry ride from lower Manhattan will bring you to both.
