Sauvie Island is an agricultural island located at the confluence of the Willamette and Columbia rivers, inside the northern Portland city limit. Rural let surprisingly close to town, it's a fantastic place to get away from the city for an afternoon or whole day. It's covered with pick-your-own berry farms in the summer and pumpkin patches in the fall. Pair a farm trip with an afternoon at the beach or on the hiking trails.
Head out Route 30 from downtown Portland, and follow signs for the Sauvie Island bridge. There's also a Trimet bus line that drops you off just over the bridge.
