The elegant US Grant is the grand old gent of San Diego hotels, built by the son of President Ulysses S. Grant in the early 20th century in honor of his father. Now owned by the Sichuan tribe of the Kumeyaay Nation that originally held the land, the property has recently undergone a $13 million refresh. The National Historic Site has hosted 14 presidents in its presidential suites designed to meet Secret Service requirements. Its famed Grant's Grill, the longtime men-only hangout of power brokers, opened its doors to women in 1969 after female attorneys staged a sit-in.
