The country's oldest aquarium, open since 1873, the National Aquarium has over 1,200 creatures on display in its tanks, including sharks, alligators, and a small sea urchin touching pool. Rather quirkily located inside the Commerce Department Building, they are rarely crowded and also have a cafeteria, which makes this a nice low-stress place to stop mid-day.

Not fun if you hate sharks.... but in all fairness, it is very well maintained and gorgeous.
