Home to one of the most astounding collections of Old Master paintings in the world, it's old (alte) in so far that the collection comprises works from the 14th to the 18th century. But the building itself was revolutionary for its time, designed by Leo von Klenze for Ludwig I, consisting of skylights and a floorplan consciously designed for the display of art, and would go on to inspire almost all museums built in the coming century.
