The Botanic Gardens is home to more than 20,000 living plants on 48 acres (19.5 ha) just three miles (5 km) from the city center. Founded in 1795 by the Dublin Society as a research center, this is where the infection responsible for the 1845-1847 potato famine was identified, and it continues an an important center for horticultural research and training. There are also two architecturally significant greenhouses: the 100-foot (30 m) long Palm House in the southern parts of the gardens and the Curvilinear Range, a long range of iron glasshouses with a distinctive curved roof. Entry is free.
