De Hortus Botanical Gardens

De Hortus Botanical Gardens

City Center

De Hortus Botanical Gardens is one of the oldest botanical gardens in the world, providing a green oasis on the edge of the city center. Founded in 1638 after a plague epidemic as a space to train doctors and pharmacists in the preparation of prescriptions using herbs from the Hortus, it soon expanded to house the exotic ornamental plants brought back by the Dutch East India Company ships, some of which can still be found along the garden paths.
