Hospicio Cabañas - now the Cabañas Cultural Institute- has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1997. One of the oldest and largest hospital complexes in the Western Hemisphere, the monumental Neoclassical complex was built in the early 19th century to care for orphans, elderly, handicapped and the chronically ill and covers nearly six acres (2.34 ha). The chapel , sometimes called "The Sistine Chapel of America," was decorated in the 1930s by famed Mexican muralist José Clemente Orozco. Inside the chapel's 107-foot (32.5 m) dome is his allegorical El Hombre de Fuego (The Man of Fire).
