Tlaquepaque - whose name translates "Hill Where Clay Comes From" - is a major center of traditional arts and crafts and contemporary design. Shoppers come here for high-quality ceramics, sculpture, wood carvings, jewelry, textiles, paintings, masks and furniture. Market stalls are open daily from morning to mid-afternoon. Upscale shops can be found along the pedestrian-only Independencia and Avenida Juárez. The historic center also has colonial churches and mansions, inviting gardens and plenty of restaurants and bars, many with live music.
