The Colonia Juárez neighborhood west of Mexico City's historic center is best known for its Zona Rosa and the gayborhood around Amberes Street. The 1985 earthquake damaged much of the posh Zona Rosa, but it began making a comeback in the 1990s after gays started moving in. Today, it is popular with tourists for its shopping, restaurants and nightlife, but it is still a little rough around the edges and has a high police presence. LGBTQ nightclubs, restaurants, bars, hotels, boutiques, bookstores, sex shops and men's clubs account for several hundred of the area's businesses. It is not unusual to see same sex couples holding hands and kissing in public.
