Every year, from January through April, gray whales migrate along the California coast making it possible for tourists to catch a glimpse from a respectful distance. Some lucky whale watchers may also get to see humpback and blue whales, who feed off the coast of the Farallon Islands, as well as the more common porpoises and seals. The ocean around San Francisco can get choppy, so you may want to bring some motion sickness tablets, along with sunblock, warm clothing, and binoculars.
