The United States Botanic Garden, located close to the Capitol Building, is the oldest of its kind in America. Established in 1820, it serves as a welcome oasis from the bustling Capitol Hill area, and a great place to take the kids when they've had enough of exploring the National Mall. The main conservatory is 29,000 square feet with over 3,500 plants including species from the rainforest, desert, and jungle. In the Children's Garden young ones can touch, smell, and water the plants in a more informal setting. Be sure to check at the Information Desk, where they offer a free Junior Botanist backpack for kids 9 and above packed with tools to help them explore.
