On the site of what was once the largest racecourse in the Far East, the People's Square is a convenient landmark in the heart of the city. Known for government buildings, museums and parks, it's notable for the Shanghai Grand Theatre, an opera house designed in the 1990s to resemble a crystal palace but unfortunately is closed to tourists. The People's Park, a pleasant green space on the north side, has a "marriage corner" where marriage want-ads are posted on weekends.
