The Boqueria public market with an entrance off La Rambla has roots in the 13th century. The present-day market took shape in late 1830s on the site of an old Carmelite convent, the enclosing colonnade designed by Josep Mas i Vila, a Catalonia architect who also did the neoclassical facade of the Barcalona City Hall. The tin roof was added in 1914. Today it is one of the world's finest fresh markets and the place to go for lunch, a cooking class or a Spanish ham.
