A few blocks north of Palacio de Bellas Artes, Plaza Garibaldi is the place to go to hear mariachi bands day or night. Friday and Saturday nights are the busiest. If in town on November 22, don't miss the big Santa Cecilia de Roma celebration. Santa Cecilia is the patron saint of musicians. Around the square any time you'll find plenty of bars, night spots and restaurants like El Salón Tenampa that has been dispensing tequila, pozole (a hominy soup) and birria (a spicy stew) along with mariachi music since the 1920s.

Bar Viena

If you are looking for Mexico City's only gay cantina, El Vieja is it. In the historic center, this Mexican-style bar is friendly with a great jukebox and a good selection of beer and tequila.
