Herald Square is home to the flagship Macy's store, and has a number of other large chain stores nearby.  A block over on Seventh Avenue is the Garment District, where you can buy wholesale fabric and sewing supplies (familiar to those who love Project Runway); it's also the site of New York's infamous sample sales, where those in-the-know go elbow-to-elbow to get designer samples at rock-bottom prices.
