Xintiandi is a fashionable pedestrian street divided into two blocks. The North Block retains the old Shikumen architecture - typical residential housing of Old Shanghai, but behind the facades are upscale shops and international restaurants. The South Block with modern architecture is six acres (about 2.5 ha) of boutiques, food courts, movies, fitness centers and restaurants. The small Shikumen Open House Museum has preserved a traditional "stone-gate" house as it would have been in the 1920s. Admission is free.
