Tivoli Gardens is the top tourist attraction in Denmark and the second oldest amusement park in the world. More than four million visitors a year pass through its gates, eager for a little piece of the magic that has defined this pleasure garden for generations. Commissioned by King Christian VIII, the park was built in the late 1800s, and was a major influence on Walt Disney's plans for his own park. It has a little bit of everything, from heart-pounding thrill rides to peaceful manicured gardens, and is the must-see stop for those who may have only a day or two in the city. Though Tivoli is beautiful during the day, the best time to visit is at night, when the twinkle of 100,000 light bulbs transforms it into something out of a fairytale. Bear in mind that all of this enchantment doesn't come cheap; tickets for entry are 99 DKK, with rides from 25 to 75 DKK, and the restaurants here are some of the most expensive in the city.
