The Jardin des Plantes, France's main botanical garden, began as a royal medicinal herb garden opened to the public in 1640. It has four galleries of the National Museum of Nature History (evolution, mineralogy, paleontology and entomology), a small zoo, an Art Deco winter garden, Mexican and Australian hothouses, a rose garden, an Alpine garden and a maze created in the 18th century. It's also a pleasant spot for strolling or taking a break from sight-seeing.
