Two of the most significant pieces of architecture in Berlin are right across from one another, the library and concert hall designed by Hans Scharoun in the sixties. A testament to West Berlin's airy and elegant hopes for its future after the war, the landmarks are well-worth at least a view from outside. The Philharmonie, though, should also be visited: it is home to the Berlin Philharmonic, the city's official orchestra, and they offer a year-round program of performances of classical and contemporary works.
