Mount Royal, from which the city draws its name, is a 764-foot hill west of downtown, topped with a 103-foot (31 m) illuminated cross and surrounded by nearly 500 acres (200 ha) of forests and meadows, laid out by Frederick Law Olmsted, who co-designed New York City's Central Park. Olmsted believed that communion with nature could cure body and soul, so much of the park has been left as wild as possible, with narrow paths meandering through tall stands of maples and red oaks, popular with picnicking families and joggers in the summer and tobogganers and cross-country skiers in the winter. If you want to explore with minimum effort, you can hire the services of a horse-drawn carriage (or sleigh in winter).

It's definitely worth to take your time and walk up the hill. It is a beautiful park, lots of nature and a great view on the city. The view also helps you to get a grip on the city's layout.
