Nanjing Road, China's #1 shopping street, is divided into two sections, starting at the Shanghai Center and arriving at Jing-an Temple over three miles (2 k.) later. The eastern section is a pedestrian street with some of city's largest and oldest department stores as well as specialty shops, fast-food outlets and theaters. The western section is where you'll find luxury boutiques like Chanel and Prada, five-star hotels and posh dining. The street takes on another life at night as both locals and visitors stroll the street, entertained by street musicians, stopping at open-air bars and surveying abstract sculpture. In "Empire of the Sun," the boy Jamie was on Nanjing Road when the Japanese invaded.
