The Panama Canal alone is reason enough for coming to Panama. Watching ships pass through the locks transfixes even locals. But there's lots more like the Spanish colonial history evident in the ruins of Panama Viejo and the architecture of Casco Viejo and the even earlier Guna culture seen every day as Guna women sell their intricately embroidered molas on the street or shop along Avenida Central. The city has luxe shopping malls that come close to Abu Dahbi's and casinos Las Vegas-style. Its museums include the Panama Canal Museum, the Frank Gehry-designed BioMuseo and the Contemporary Art Museum. Beaches and jungle are a short drive away.
